System Update Instructions for the PC3K OS v2.10

UPDATE METHODS:

The PC3K can be updated by one of two methods:

Method (a): (*recommended*) direct USB connection to computer
requires: Computer (Mac or PC) with USB port + USB cable. Please remove any thumb drive connected to the PC3K during the update.

Method (b): USB storage device
requires: Computer (Mac or PC) with USB port + USB Storage device - such as a thumb drive.
Notes on updating via thumb-drive:
*Thumb drives drawing 100 mA or less are recommended.
*We advise using the smallest capacity thumb drive you have available.
*After plugging the drive into the PC3K, wait for about a 30 seconds before proceeding with the install.
*The OS update .KUF file must be located in the drive's root (top) directory, not within any sub-folders. An "Error -2" message will be displayed if this is not the case.
*After copying the .KUF file to the thumb drive, be sure to to Eject/Unmount the Thumb Drive from your computer before physically unplugging it from the computer's USB port.

UPDATE PROCEDURE:

!! Before updating, be sure to back up any custom programming as user memory will be erased in the process!!

Note: if you have the "K2661 ROM Compatibility File" installed it too will be erased in the update process and need to be reloaded afterwards.

Obtain the latest system updates.
- Go to PC3K Downloads Section on our site.
- Under O/S "Updates" download the current update package.
(Be sure to carefully read through the included Release Notes.)
Choosing Update Method:
(a) If updating via USB-to-Computer connection, connect USB cable between PC3K "Computer" USB port and any available USB port on your PC/Mac.
-OR-
(b) If updating via USB storage device (for ex. thumb drive) insert the device into to a free USB port on your computer .
Enter the Boot Loader:
Power the PC3K OFF. Press/Hold the EXIT button and turn the PC3K on. Release the EXIT button when the Boot Loader's menu of options appears on the screen:

You will use the various "soft buttons" under the screen to control the update process.
Copy the System Files:

The software update file needs to be either (a) sent to the PC3K via direct USB cable connection. -or- (b) copied to a USB storage device and then physically transfered to the PC3K

(a) To copy directly via USB: at step 10 (below), when selecting "PC USB" as your update method, a PC3K device image/temporary-drive will appear on your desktop as a removable disk icon or a window. At that time you will be instructed to copy (drag and drop) the update file to this temporary removable disk. Be sure to copy the specified file when prompted. For now, proceed.

(b) To copy using a USB device: connect USB device to your computer, then copy the PC3KV210.KUF file to the root directory of the device using the method specific to your computer system. Safely eject/unmount the device from your computer, afterwards physically remove it, then connect it to the PC3K "Storage" USB port (wait @30sec before proceeding).

Press System Utilities:

                 Run    System   Run     System   System
                 PC3K   Update   Diags   Reset    Utilities

Press Format Flash:

                 Format  Install Restore 
                 Flash   Module  Older                Back

Press OK:

                 This will delete all user data, OS images,
                 and installed objects.  Are you sure?                  
                  
                                                 OK   CANCEL

A "Please wait..." message will appear while formatting takes place.

Press OK:

                 Done formatting flash.
                           
                                                      OK

Press System Update:

                 Run    System   Run     System   System
                 PC3K   Update   Diags   Reset    Utilities

Select Storage Type: pick either (a) "PC USB"* (if installing via direct USB connection). -or- (b) "USB Device"** (if installing from USB thumb device)

*(a) If choosing "PC USB" you will see a prompt to copy your files now. Copy the PC3KV210.KUF file now to the temporary removable disk on your computer. Once copied, press OK on the PC3K to proceed.
**(b) If choosing "USB Device", note that accessing the drive can take up to one minute. Please be patient.

Need be, using the data wheel, select the PC3KV210.KUF file (asterisk ∗ placed next to selection):

                 Select File (.KUF files only) \

Press OK:

A progress screen appears while the file is loaded.
IMPORTANT NOTE: you may possibly see Error messages such as "-13" and/or " -16", indicating the "installation failed". If so, you will need to power off and restart the installation procedure from step 3 above. The subsequent install should proceed without error.

Press OK:

                 File PC3KV210.KUF was installed.
                           
                                                      OK

Confirm the new Boot Loader version: The new Boot Loader version will be displayed in the upper right hand corner. It should appear as follows:

Power the PC3K Off and back On:
The PC3K will reboot to normal operating mode and is ready for use.
Confirm the OS and Objects were installed correctly: Once powered back up, go to MASTER mode, press the OBJECT menu soft button. Confirm you see the following:

If for some reason the install did not complete properly, simply power off and repeat from the beginning (step 3).

TROUBLESHOOTING:

Note: we have seen a few rare instances where after this OS installation the thumb drive may not work. If you experience such issues, please run the following internal utility to rectify things:

Remove any attached USB thumb device
Enter the Boot Loader
Press System Utilities
Press Reload USBhost
Press OK to confirm
On screen you should see a message indicating the "host controller is working" - press OK again
Press Back
Power the PC3K Off and back On

The PC3K will reboot to normal operating mode and is ready again for use.
